Ukraine - South Ukraine Regional Transmission Network Development
NPC Ukrenergo aims at de-bottlenecking the regional network (up to 750 kV) in South Ukraine for more efficient and reliable power supply, plus accelerating the integration of solar and wind power into the national power grid within the next 15 years. The Consultant was appointed to assist NPC Ukrenergo to assess the implication of installing sizeable solar and wind power generation capacities in Ukraine.
The project is divided in two phases:
- Phase I: Regional Power Network Development Master Plan and Solar & Wind Power In-tegration Assessment
- Phase II - Project Preparation of Two Priority Investment Packages
The assignment has the following main tasks:
- Master planning of the regional power network development at 750, 330, 220 and 110 kV voltage levels in South Ukraine from a 5 and 15-year perspective
- Determination of the appropriate levels of wind and solar power capacity and appropriate operational and technical parameters for management of such connected capacity
- Drafting necessary documents regulating technical aspects of solar and wind energy operation in Ukraine
- Identifying the short and medium-term investments needed to strengthen the regional grid, and to increase the capacity of wind and solar power that could be connected in South Ukraine
- Determination of the required spare generating capacity in an interconnected power system (IPS) based on power balance analysis, type and operational parameters of such generating capacity to compensate fluctuating energy supply by large commercial-scale wind and solar power plants
- Prioritisation of construction/reinforcement projects to be implemented by 2030
- Strengthening the Client's capacity to perform better network planning and operation
- Performing comprehensive technical, economic, commercial and socio-environmental fea-sibility assessment of two projects to be prioritised among those identified in the master plan

Uganda - Karuma Interconnection Project (Kawanda 400 kV, Karuma - Lira 132 kV Transmission Lines and Associated Substations)
The Government of Uganda has launched a number of major projects in the energy sector, among which is the construction of the Karuma Hydropower Project (600 MW) on the Nile River, expected for commissioning in 2018. The present "Karuma Interconnection Project (KIP)" will provide the transmission infrastructure for evacuating the power generated by the Karuma Hydropower Plant. It includes the following components:
- Construction of a 400 kV D/C line between Karuma HPS Substation and Kawanda Substation (264 km)
- Upgrading of Kawanda and Karuma Substations (line bays, transformers, busbars, control and protection)
- Construction of a 132 kV D/C line between Karuma and Lira (80 km)

Tanzania - Zanzibar Renewable Energies and Energy Efficiency Programme
The EU has formulated a comprehensive programme to support the RE and EE Initiative in Zanzibar. This includes the supply and installation of wind and solar measurement equipment (separately contracted) and the recruitment of consultancy services for the implementation of the programme in 2 lots: the present study work (Lot 1) and technical assistance for the implementation of RE and EE projects to be separately contracted as Lot 2.

The present project is part of the Energy Strategy of Ukraine to 2030 and is aimed at improving the regional power system efficiency, stability and reliability on the Crimean peninsula. It consists of the construction of a 750 kV OHL from Zaporizhzhia Substation to the new Kakhovska Substation and related 330 kV connections, as follows:
- Construction of a 190 km of 750 kV transmission line between Zaporizhzhia NPP and Kakhovska Substation with fibre optic and maintenance workshop
- Construction of a new 750/330/220 kV Substation at Kakhovska, with two 1000 MVA automatic transformers and automatic control system
- Constructing the diversion of the existing 330 kV Novokakhovska - Ostrovska line (2 x 27 km), incl. rehabilitation of the 330 kV Ostrovska Substation, replacement of relay protection and automatics, communication devices, the construction of a control unit at Novokakhovska Substation and the installation of the fibre-optic system Novokakhovska - Kakhovska

The multiplication of generation sources, the future development of the national transmission network and its interconnection to neighbouring countries require modern means of dispatching so as to facilitate, stabilise and optimise its operation. The construction of a national dispatching centre on the site of Lafiabougou Substation in Bamako has to be seen in this context.
The Consultant's mission generally aims at controlling and managing the related budget, the quality and the implementation period of works. It shall assure the correct realisation of the National Dispatching Centre through the implementation of all necessary site works.

Burundi - Hydropower Plant Rusumo Falls - Transmission Line Component (Burundi part of the regional project Burundi - Ruanda - Tanzania)
The "Regional Hydropower Plant Rusumo Falls" project was jointly developed by Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania. It includes the construction of a hydropower plant as well as the construction of 387 km of high-voltage lines and associated substations in the three countries (the present project).
In Burundi, services include detailed design and works supervision for the following:
- One 220 kV double-circuit transmission line of 161 km length, from the hydropower plant to the existing Gitega substation (double circuit, with steel groundwire and an OPGW on lattice steel towers);
- One new 220/30 kV substation at Muyinga, a new 220/110 kV substation at Gitega and its connection to the existing 130/30 kV substation at Gitega.

Guinea - Linsan - Fomi Transmission Line (CLSG / Rural Electrification Component Guinea)
The Linsan - Fomi transmission line project is one of the priority projects identified in the elec-trification masterplan of Guinea. The implementation of this line aims at ensuring a stable in-tegration of the national electricity networks of the ECOWAS member countries. At the same time, it serves to evacuate the power produced by the Kaleta Power Plant, the projected Souapiti HPP and other power plants to come.
The project covers the construction of approx. 394 km of 225 kV double-circuit transmission line between Linsan, Dabola, Kouroussa and Fomi with four associated 225 kV substations. It covers the following tasks:
- Line routing and production of maps, plans and profile drawings

Burundi - Hydropower Plant Rusumo Falls - Transmission Line Component (Burundi part of the regional project Burundi - Ruanda - Tanzania)
The "Regional Hydropower Plant Rusumo Falls" project was jointly developed by Burundi, Rwanda, and Tanzania. It includes the construction of a hydropower plant as well as the construction of 387 km of high-voltage lines and associated substations in the three countries (the present project).
In Burundi, services include detailed design and works supervision for the following:
- One 220 kV double-circuit transmission line of 161 km length, from the hydropower plant to the existing Gitega substation (double circuit, with steel groundwire and an OPGW on lattice steel towers);
- One new 220/30 kV substation at Muyinga, a new 220/110 kV substation at Gitega and its connection to the existing 130/30 kV substation at Gitega.

The Linsan - Fomi transmission line project is one of the priority projects identified in the elec-trification masterplan of Guinea. The implementation of this line aims at ensuring a stable in-tegration of the national electricity networks of the ECOWAS member countries. At the same time, it serves to evacuate the power produced by the Kaleta Power Plant, the projected Souapiti HPP and other power plants to come.
The project covers the construction of approx. 394 km of 225 kV double-circuit transmission line between Linsan, Dabola, Kouroussa and Fomi with four associated 225 kV substations. It covers the following tasks:
- Line routing and production of maps, plans and profile drawings
- Environmental and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA)
- Elaboration of the Environmental and Social Management Plan (ESMP)
- Elaboration of the Resettlement Action Plan (RAP)
