intec won its first solar project in Egypt
New and Renewable Energy Authority (NREA) has set strategic targets to supply 20 % of the electric energy demand from renewable energy sources by the year 2022. In response to the Egyptian government's request, Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau (KfW) has cooperated with NREA on the identification and financing of a solar PV power plant to be built in Zafarana.
NREA signed a 7-year contract to implement consultancy services for this solar power plant in Zafarana with the intec GOPA-International Energy Consultants GmbH. The duties of the implementation consultant comprise technical support until end of warranty period. The services include assistance in engineering, procurement and construction supervision, commissioning and O&M supervision for one phase with a nominal power of 50 MW.
KfW is financing the project with a soft loan of EUR 50 million, and is currently finishing the technical and financial evaluation for the selection of the EPC contractor, which is expected to be completed by the end of December 2019.
The Zafarana plant is the second project implemented by the NREA in the framework of its plan to diversify the mix of renewable energy projects. The total installed capacity of 5,425 MW comprises 1,375 MW of wind power, 1,220 MW of photovoltaic systems, and 2,830 MW of hydropower, which are implemented through Government agreements in addition to projects by the private sector.
The Egyptian and Arab Press reported in detail on this project in its September editions:
