intec stays the course: after almost 3 challenging years the second phase of Nigerian Energy Support Program (NESP II) is now complete
An Innovative Approach for Attracting Investment to the Nigerian Power Sector and Delivering Premium Services (24/7) in Ring-Fenced Areas
NESP II has achieved another significant milestone; the successful pilot of distribution franchising projects in collaboration with DISCOs in Abuja (AEDC), Kaduna (KAEDCO) and Kano (KEDCO).
NESP II has conducted a workshop demonstrating the outcomes and benefits of Premium Grids.
Said grids are a practical solution to providing high quality, and most crucially reliable electricity, by protecting private investments, sharing risks, and structuring payments.
They can play a significant role in enhancing energy access and fast-tracking Nigeria’s Energy Transi-tion Plan (ETP). The Electrification Distribution Franchising Guidelines are already in place thanks to NERC.
The top-level conference, held on 24 January 2023, was chaired by the Federal Ministry of Power (FMP). Over 150 representatives from the Nigerian energy supply industry attended in person in Abuja and the rest attended online.
Technical assistance to prepare the conference was provided by intec in the context of the Nigerian Energy Support Programme (NESP II) - Supporting Nigeria’s Strategy to Promote On-Grid Renewable Energies.
intec supported different Nigerian stakeholders in the electricity sector, whose remit is to promote on-grid renewables, from January 2019 to November 2022.
Our support was conducted through the second phase of Nigerian Energy Support Program (NESP II). NESP II (co-funded by the European Union (EU) and the German government) is implemented by GIZ in collaboration with the FMP.
The delivered services included more than 90 Terms of Reference (ToRs) documents, with several de-liverables, for each in the frame of the following Work Packages (WPs):
• WP 1: On-Grid Solar Network Analysis;
• WP 2: Development and Enforcement of the regulatory Framework;
• WP 3: Grid Studies;
• WP 4: Power System Planning; and,
• WP 5: Competitive procurement.
