intec’s support to municipalities in Sub-Saharan Africa

The European Commission launched the “Covenant of Mayors in Sub-Saharan Africa” to support African cities to cope with their future challenges, by increasing their planning capacities and providing them with a platform to share knowledge and best practices. As a result of the technical competence of our experts and our wide experience and in-depth knowledge of the African energy sector, intec was recently awarded a project which is part of this initiative and will be coordinated by Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ). intec manages the project and will be supported by its sister company GOPA Infra and by ICLEI - Local Governments for Sustainability (Bonn).

The two-year project aims to support municipalities to identify and support sustainable investments in the fields of energy and waste management essentially in three countries: Kenya, Cameroon and Burkina Faso. A further additional country will be identified at a later stage of the project.

The team, altogether 16 experts, will provide support to several communes in the four countries in the definition of pre-feasibility and bankable projects in order to attract investments from IFIs and national governments. The municipalities play a crucial role in terms of energy and waste policy, offering potentially comprehensive opportunities for creating a healthy climate for investment and growth. As a consequence this means that the project team will focus its activities on two fundamental factors: the direct participation of the civil society in the project identification, and an empowerment of the capacities of local authorities.
